ANEAW Award

I’m very pleased to announce that my painting, Nostalgia, has just been awarded The Lorraine Rosenau Alexander Memorial Award for Color and Pattern, in the 45th Adirondack National Exhibition of American Watercolors! Many thanks to The View Arts Center, the Alexander family, and judge Sarah Yeoman for this honor.

For any other artists out there that find themselves frustrated with entering juried shows, Nostalgia was recently rejected from one show, then went on to win one of the top awards in another show. You never know what will happen, so keep trying!

The ANEAW show opens on August 9th and runs through September 27th at The View Arts Center in Old Forge, NY. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 am – 4 pm.

Trouble with Bubbles

I think it’s important as an artist to keep painting new things and trying new ideas. Not every painting is great and some are just learning experiences! The latest painting I’ve been working on is based on a photo I took many years ago of sea foam at the beach. I loved the colorful bubbles and my own warped shadows on the bubbles. I forced myself to finish this painting, but it was a struggle. Here is the finished painting, along with some work in progress photos.

New painting

Here is my latest transparent watercolor painting, entitled Camouflage. On one of my many winter hikes this year I came across this sleepy guy, blending in perfectly with his home! I believe it is a Barred Owl. The painting is 11″ x 14″, much smaller than my usual paintings, and came together very quickly. As I am a transparent watercolor artist, all the white in the painting is paper, not paint. I used a combination of resist and negative painting to preserve the white of the paper.
