Quiet Cove

My latest watercolor painting is called Quiet Cove. It’s based on another photograph I took at the Chittenden Reservoir in Vermont. I painted the foliage using a negative shape painting technique, which was very challenging for me. Although it was a bit difficult way for me to paint, I like the way the leaves come up out of the background and plan to use that technique again.

Merganser

This small (8″x10″) watercolor painting is entitled Merganser. The painting is based on a photograph I took while kayaking at the Chittenden Reservoir this past summer. A female Red-Breasted Merganser kept me company, while I was exploring one of the inlets, and posed several times so I could snap her picture.

New Paintings

Here are a couple of new paintings that I just completed. This first one is entitled Lilac, and yes, I added a couple of bugs to the painting.

The second one is called Anthony Kill. This painting is three feet wide and based on a photograph of the entrance to the Anthony Kill, from Round Lake. I’m dedicating this painting in loving memory of Heather Bickel, one of my dearest friends and kayaking buddies.

10 x 10 = 100 Show

Saratoga Arts is hosting a show entitled 10 x 10 = 100, in honor of Saratoga Springs’ Centennial Celebration. Over 100 regional artists, including myself, will have work on display from August 1 – September 26 at the Arts Center in Saratoga. All works are 10″ by 10″ in size and for sale at $100. The following images are my paintings on display. My son once told me that my paintings are “too girly,” so in response, I’ve added tiny insects to each of the paintings.

Trillium

In May, I did a presentation for the Southern Saratoga Artists’ Society. Many thanks to the SSAS for inviting me to present. The watercolor demonstration I did was the beginning of this painting. I finally got around to finishing the painting this week. Trillium is based on a photograph of a Red Trillium flower that I found in the woods behind my house.

Nests

I’ve just completed a very challenging set of commissioned paintings entitled Empty Nesters. Since every branch of each nest needed to be the same, I worked on both paintings at once… one branch at a time. For 90% of the paintings I used a #00 size brush. I also used a very limited palette: Sienna, Burnt Umber, Prussian Blue, Cobalt Blue and Cadmium Yellow.

Lewey Lake

This commissioned painting, entitled Lewey Lake, is the largest watercolor painting I have done to date. It measures 2 x 3 feet and took me the entire winter to complete. The image is comprised of 3 different photos, all taken from my boat on Lewey Lake in the Adirondack Mountains. Snowy Mountain is seen in the background, and the Pickeral Weed (What a horrid name for such a beautiful flower!) can be found in the stream connecting Lewey and Indian Lake.
